Modern warehousing aims at satisfying the demand of supply chain upstream and downstream. It relies on warehouse facilities and information technology to plan, execute and control the logistics activities of goods'entry and exit, inventory, processing, packaging, sorting, distribution and information effectively.

The four basic characteristics of modern warehousing are: (1) dynamic management. Traditional warehousing is mainly static management of warehouse and goods, the more goods stored, the better; modern warehousing is dynamic management of goods, the core is to control the inventory of goods, the fewer goods stored, the better, the more frequently goods enter and leave the warehouse, the faster the better. (2) Value-added services. Traditional warehousing services have a single function, mainly warehousing management; modern warehousing services are multi-functional, integrated and value-added. (3) Mechanization and automation. Traditional warehousing is mainly manual operation, while modern warehousing is mainly mechanized operation, with automatic operation. (4) Information management. The traditional warehousing management is the desk account + stacking card; the modern warehousing is the use of computer information system (WMS).

2. Modern warehousing: self-built or rented warehouses, providing warehousing management and value-added services for industrial and commercial enterprises.

Self-service warehousing: Rent warehouses of different specifications to individual consumers or small and medium-sized enterprises, and provide environmental and safety protection. Customers manage their own warehouse items.

Warehouse Leasing (Real Estate Warehousing): Self-built warehouses provide warehouse leasing and related services, not warehousing services.

Financial warehousing (customarily known as "chattel pledge supervision" in China and "collateral management" in foreign countries): public warehousing enterprises or collateral management enterprises are entrusted by loan institutions to supervise or monitor the implementation of collateral inventory.

Third, the typical mode of modern warehousing embodies four basic characteristics of modern warehousing: public warehousing (service warehousing). Its typical mode is all kinds of logistics distribution centers, namely, inventory control center in logistics and supply chain management, processing and distribution center, value-added service center and application center of modern logistics equipment technology. This is fundamentally different from the distribution centers of transportation companies and express delivery companies. Most of the distribution centers belong to "cross-warehouse operations" and do not have the functions of inventory management.
